What is a voice-activated teleprompter?
It's a teleprompter that moves forward when it hears you say the words, instead of scrolling at a fixed speed. Atrio is one for iPhone: speech recognition on the device matches your voice to the script and holds the line when you stop.
When you read a long script or speak to the camera, your natural delivery changes speed. You slow down to emphasize a point, pause to breathe, or repeat a phrase that felt flat. A voice teleprompter tracks those changes by listening to the words you actually say.
How Atrio's voice follow works
Choose a folder of .txt or .md scripts in Files or iCloud Drive and turn on Voice. As you read, Apple Speech or NVIDIA Parakeet, both running on the iPhone, match your words to the script. The current line moves on only after you say it. Stop mid-sentence and the line stays right there until you start again.
You can choose your recognition engine in Settings. Apple Speech is built into iOS 26 and may download a language model the first time you use a language. NVIDIA Parakeet TDT v3 is an optional download inside the app. Once your model and scripts are on the phone, you can turn on Airplane Mode and record without a connection.
While you read, you can turn on the front camera to record your take in portrait orientation. You can move the reading line up toward the front camera lens, so you read your script while looking into the camera. If you want tips on camera placement and line width, read our guide on how to read a teleprompter.
Why voice beats a fixed scroll speed
A words-per-minute scroll has to guess your pace. If you stop to find a word, answer a question, or take a breath, a fixed-speed scroll keeps going without you. Voice follow doesn't guess. It listens and moves when you say the next word.
With a timed scroll, a single stumble often ruins the take because the text rolls past your place while you recover. You have to reach out, touch the screen, scroll back up, and start over. With voice follow, the script waits at the word where you stopped. You can take a second to collect your thoughts, re-read the sentence from the beginning, and keep recording.
If a project calls for a steady timer instead, Atrio still includes a free words-per-minute autoplay mode and manual touch scrolling. You can read more about the free features on our free teleprompter app page.
A voice activated teleprompter app, not a web tool
Many voice prompters run inside a desktop web browser. A browser tool works if you are sitting at a desk on a webcam call, because your script and your camera share the computer monitor. It stops working when you want to record vertical video on your phone, film in another room, or mount your phone on a tripod or teleprompter glass.
Browser-based voice prompters also depend on the browser tab and often send your microphone audio over an internet connection to process speech. If your Wi-Fi drops or the browser tab loses microphone permission, the script stops tracking. You also have to paste your scripts into a web form or create an account to save them.
A dedicated voice activated teleprompter app on iPhone (iOS 26 or later) keeps everything on one device. Speech recognition runs on the iPhone processor, so your live audio stays on your phone and never goes to a server. Your scripts stay as plain .txt and .md files in your own Files or iCloud Drive folders.
Using an iPhone app also means the front camera and the teleprompter run together. Every take records video and audio and saves directly to your Photos app without a watermark. If you use a beam-splitter rig with a dedicated camera, you can turn on mirror mode (horizontal, vertical, or both) and set the iPhone in the tray with no laptop or cables needed. Free to try, free forever for autoplay
Atrio is free to download. Autoplay, manual scroll, front-camera recording and mirror mode are free. Voice follow is free for your first 3 sessions, then a one-time $14.99 in-app purchase unlocks it for life. No subscription. No ads. No account.
Those 3 free sessions let you test voice follow on your own script, in your own recording space, before you pay anything. If you are comparing pricing models across apps, see our PromptSmart alternative and BIGVU alternative pages.
15 spoken languages
Voice follow works in the 15 languages Atrio supports: English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Arabic, Turkish, Dutch, and Polish.
Apple Speech covers 14 of these languages (all except Polish). The optional NVIDIA Parakeet TDT v3 model covers 9 of them: English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Dutch, and Polish. Both engines run on the iPhone.
Questions about voice follow
- What is a voice-activated teleprompter?
- A teleprompter that moves the script when it hears you say the words, rather than scrolling at a fixed speed. Atrio does it on the iPhone with on-device speech recognition.
- Is there a teleprompter app that follows your voice?
- Yes. Atrio is an iPhone teleprompter app that follows your voice word by word. It uses on-device speech recognition to advance the script as you speak and wait when you pause.
- How does Atrio know when I stop talking?
- It keeps matching your speech to the script. When what you say stops matching the next words, the current line waits until you start again.
- Does voice follow work without internet?
- Yes. Speech recognition runs on the iPhone with Apple Speech or NVIDIA Parakeet, so once your scripts and voice models are on the phone, voice follow works offline.
- Is voice follow free?
- For your first 3 sessions. After that, a one-time $14.99 unlock removes the limit. Autoplay and manual scroll stay free either way.
- What if I don't want to use my voice?
- Autoplay scrolls by words per minute without the microphone, and manual scroll lets you move the script yourself. Both are always free.
